Naming Announcement... Pathways Park!

Over the last few months, you submitted over 250 ideas for a new name for the Burke Gilman Playground Park. Two names rose to the top: Pathways Park and Rainbow Ravine Park.

Our partners at Seattle Parks and Recreation have approved a new name! In honor of the past and present Duwamish people, the name has also been translated into Southern Lushootseed. Today, we are excited to share the new name:

“I love Pathways Park as a name for this space. I think it so genuinely captures the spirit of this whole project and the journey we’ve taken.”

“Pathways represents the literal pathways through the park and the figurative ones that bring people here, welcoming everyone.”

“I love that the park has parallel pathways and is accessible to all. I also love that these pathways inherently lead to the intermingling of people of all different abilities and are inclusive to all.”

We love it too! Thank you all for contributing and supporting this naming process. We are looking forward to breaking ground this summer and hanging with you at Pathways Park!

$850,000 for Eli's Park?

Friends, Supporters and Beautiful People Who Made Eli’s Park Project Possible…

We are finalists for a really exciting grant from the Dan Thompson Memorial Fund for $850,000! If we receive this award we will surpass our fundraising goal, break ground this summer and build the entire park! (We’re pretty sure we need to exceed $5 million by a comfortable margin in the current market to guarantee nothing gets cut.)

We need your help one more time!

This grant is funded through the Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA). The last step in securing this funding is to prove to the council that the funding will directly benefit people who are eligible for DDA services.

If you are a teacher, community group or organization who serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, will you write letter on behalf of your organization and community stating who you are, who you serve and how people who are eligible for DDA services will utilize the park once it’s built?

If you have a disability, or love and care for someone with a disability, will you write a short testimonial stating how you, as a person, or with a person, who is eligible for DDA services will utilize the park once it’s built?

Absolutely anything you can send by Friday, May 6th will greatly increase our chances of securing this last amount and beginning the next chapter of the project.

The five remaining names meet the all of the following criteria:

They come from the community.

They are meaningful and memorable.

They connect to the people, place and/or project.

They reflect our community’s values.

As frequently requested, names will also be translated into Southern Lushootseed to honor the Duwamish People past and present.

We will share the survey results with our partners at Seattle Parks and Recreation to help inform their formal naming protocol.
